“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Hebrews 10: 24-25

faith through fellowship

There’s something special about being together as women – there is honest conversation, heart-felt encouragement, and laughter, even when we are in different life phases or stages. Best of all, there’s something special about women encouraging each other to know and experience the grace of Jesus Christ. That is our hope and prayer through our ministry with women at First Pres. If you are a woman, no matter your marital status, your work status, your age – you will find a place at First Pres to journey with each other as we come to know and experience the love of the Lord more.

APRIL 16-17
For thirty plus years, women from First Pres and their friends have been rolling the proverbial dice by traveling to the mountains in the WINTER for a retreat.  The retreat is a bright spot in the otherwise cold month of February.  It’s full of life-giving community and the life-giving words of Scripture.   Only one time have we been snowed out. Never did we expect that something other than the weather would keep us away.  In this pandemic year, we will not be going to Montreat but we will still be gathering as women for a local retreat.  Since we can, we’ll be meeting in a warmer month: April!  The retreat will have flexible and safe options for engagement.  But like all retreats, it will include time to engage with the Lord & His Word.  Jennifer Hagin, our speaker, will lead us in an exploration of faith in the wilderness and the way that the Lord uses difficult seasons to develop in us spiritual practices and deeper faith.  Can you think of a better topic for this year?  In addition to great teaching, we will also connect  with each other in community, and of course revel in snacks and merriment.

In the fall, our Women’s Bible Study morphed in order to adapt to life during a pandemic.  We weren’t sure whether adapting would work, but we knew we wanted to try because we fervently believe that the Lord can and does encourage and transform us through Scripture and community (and we need that all the time, even or especially in difficult times!).  To our great thanksgiving, we have heard and witnessed that women have been strengthened in the Lord through the study and that the changes have actually enabled more women to engage, even those who might not be able to during “normal” times.  With this in mind, we will continue to offer WBS in this new way, with an eye on adapting as we go.  Our goal has never been to get women into WBS, but to encourage women to be with the Lord and each other.  If WBS helps you to do that, we encourage you to sign up for our spring semester today!

flexible curriculum

We aren’t sure what book of the Bible we will be studying yet, but we do know that it will be written in such a way to give you flexible study options.  So, if you have lots of time on your hands, there will be an in-depth inductive study.    But if you can’t squeeze in one more thing, there will be ways for you to engage with the Scripture while you do normal life.  We will make the curriculum available to anyone who would like it, even if you end up doing the study yourself, or put it on a shelf for later (or leave in an email folder).  The curriculum will come electronically, with printed copies on request.

Bible Study discussion groups will officially start January 13/14.  Registration is open! No need to register if you participated in fall WBS,

What an amazing Lord we follow, the One who makes life flourish even in our constraints!  Let’s follow Jesus with joy.

flexible discussion group options

We know that one schedule will not work for everyone, nor one style.  So we are encouraging and offering these options for discussion and prayer:
1. None.  If you want the curriculum, but don’t have the space for discussion with others, that’s okay!

2. Find a spiritual companion/group. If you want to use the curriculum and find a friend, or group of friends, to get together and discuss, that’s great.  If you do get together with others, outside of the formalized groups offered by the church, we ask that you either Zoom or graciously follow all health guidelines if you meet in-person (guidelines will be provided).

3. Zoom Discussion Group. We will offer two formal times for Zoom Discussion Groups:  Wednesday, 7:00-8:00pm and Thursday 9:30-11:00am.  These groups will begin with 15 minutes of large group time, that may include a short devotional and prayer, and then we will break into smaller groups for discussion.  The same women will be in the same smaller discussion groups each week.
