We Need from You: 


Where: The Dominican Republic– Flying into Santo Domingo, ministering in Cielo and Nazaret- nearby communities

We are going to the Dominican Republic to serve with Mission Emanuel .  We will be travelling to the DR as a group; riding on one bus to the airport, taking the same flight to the DR, etc.  When we arrive in the DR, we stay at the  Dominican Fiesta Hotel, which is a resort-style hotel near Santo Domingo .  The students are allowed to be in their rooms or at the pool area, and security at the hotel is good.

We will arrive in the DR and use that evening to rest and prepare for the upcoming work week.  A typical work day consists of working in the morning, breaking for lunch, working in the afternoon and then coming back to the hotel for free time, dinner, and then a devotional time in the evening. We purposefully build ‘space’ into the trip for students to have time to process what they are seeing, experiencing, and learning.  Our work projects will consist of light construction, visiting local villages, leading sports camps, visiting a leprosarium, and other activities.  We are breaking up students into work teams, and each team will have at least one adult chaperone.


Preparing for the Trip

At this point we have 28 spaces available for students on this trip. This number is based on the airline tickets we were able to reserve.  Since we do not have unlimited spots for students, we are going to be allocating our spaces on a first come, first served basis.  In order to secure your spot, we need to have your registration filled out (link to online registration above) and a $350 deposit.  Applications are due on March 7th. If the available spots fill up before the deadline, students will be placed on a waiting list for the trip.  There is a chance that we will be able to reserve more spots if the trip fills, but we cannot guarantee that the price of the trip will not increase (due to flight costs).

We are also holding three mandatory trip preparation meetings before we depart for the DR.  We feel it is part of our duty as ministry leaders to prepare the students for what they will see, and ‘make room’ in their hearts and spirits for God to work.  We hope you will  recognize the importance of these meetings and make them a priority.     These meetings will focus on both spiritual and practical aspects of our trip.  They will also provide a chance for our mission team to get to know each other and feel ready to work together in the DR.  Because this trip is a big commitment on many levels, we are taking our promise to prepare these students seriously.  We will ask trip participants to do some preparation work before they come to each meeting.  More details as to meeting locations and content will be communicated closer to the time of the meetings. We will also be sending a weekly email for our trip members beginning in May.  Please read these emails, and prepare yourself for the trip spiritually just as you would physically or financially!

Please also save the date for Packing Night on Thursday, June 15th.  Packing Night will be a drop in event from 6-8 PM where trip members will drop off their packed luggage to be weighed, measured (to make sure they line up with airline requirements) and filled to the gills with mission supplies!

  • FULL TRIP BALANCE is owed if a student drops from the trip after May 1st
  • Final Trip Balance Due June 1st

The trip cost includes:  Airfare,  Transportation to Airport, Mission Emanuel Cost, DR Immigration Fees, Trip Insurance, all food while travelling with the group and accommodations.

The only money your student will need to bring will be for souvenirs or items they want to buy in airports or during free time. 


 The Fine Print: The $350 deposit is nonrefundable, and goes directly to secure your airline ticket and spot with Mission Emanuel.  If a student drops from the trip after May 1st, they owe their full trip balance.  All other/remaining money will be allocated to the general trip fund.   Students who register after the March 7th deadline will not be guaranteed a spot, and will owe a $50 late fee.


Passports are required to be allowed into the Dominican Republic.  It is a good idea to go ahead and apply now for a passport if you do not already have one.  You can now apply for passports at the North Point or Hanes Mall locations of the Post Office.  Anyone applying for their first passport, or applying for a passport under the age of 16 must apply in person.  The fees for applying for a passport are roughly $100.  Two identical 2×2” pictures are also required for the application.  You can get your passport photo taken at the PO location or at many local drugstores.  It can take as much as 10 weeks to get a passport, the US Passport service recommends applying for a passport now for summer travel.  Expedited passports are available, but with extra fees.  We also need to have a copy of each student’s passport before we leave Winston-Salem.  Please turn in a copy of your passport with your trip registration or as soon as you receive your passport.  

According to the Center for Disease Control, the recommended vaccinations for visiting the Dominican Republic are: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Rabies.  Mission Emanuel only requires the tetanus shot.  Anti-malaria medications are optional.  Your doctor may also recommend other vaccinations depending on your individual health history. Your primary care physician can administer all necessary vaccinations.  To have the most benefit, see a health-care provider at least 4–6 weeks before your trip to allow time for your vaccines to take effect and to start taking medicine to prevent malaria, if you need it.  As many of you have heard, a lot of our travelers get the infamous stomach bug while in the DR.  We will advise students on ways to avoid this, as well as have basic medical supplies and treatments on hand while on the trip.

web5Special Activities/Projects

In the past, several students have planned special activities or projects to do while on the trip.  Examples include sports clinics, VBS-style activities, and more.  If you have an idea of something you want to do, please talk to Marissa or Davin- we would love to help you make that happen!
We also frequently collect special items to give to Mission Emanuel, the leprosarium, or to distribute in the DR.   In the past students have created donation drives for sports equipment, held a shoe drive, or collected items for a special gift for the people we visit at the leprosarium. Adult  Leader Infoweb4

We will have a 6:1 adult to student ratio on this trip.  We are blessed to be able to offer a scholarship for our adult leaders who travel with us to the DR.  Adults who are year round youth ministry volunteers are able to travel to the DR on a full scholarship.  Parents and other adult volunteers are able to travel with us for a cost of $1000.  If you are interested in coming to the DR as a leader on the high school trip, please email Marissa.
