Our Spring 2008 Tuesday Night series is Ground to Stand On,
based on the letter to the Hebrews. As I
study the spiritual climate of the time this letter was written, I am struck by
certain similarities to our own time and culture.
I'm not interested in fighting
society, and I have no desire to promote a defensive faith. I don't want to spend a semester
talking about the right way to argue, or how we can shelter ourselves from the
world around us. I hope by studying
Hebrews, that we can find some clarity and purpose in our confusing times. Often, it seems like we're drowning, or
at least lost at sea. Lost
in a sea of theological confusion, of postmodern emptiness, of selfishness, and
of boredom.
The letter to the Hebrews was
written to the followers of Jesus scattered across the world. It was a letter to remind them that Jesus of Nazareth
is God's promised messiah. That
Jesus' way is supreme, that authority is clear, that faith is possible
and powerful. I want us to be encouraged
this semester that truth exists, that we have ground to stand on.
